The third and final installment of Curt Arens’ story from Crofton, Nebraska, arrives today to the ‘digital continent.’ Once again, what an incredible story of trusting in God’s plan, even when life throws a huge curve ball that devastates a family. It is those times that the Catholic faith shines forth and remains a beacon of hope, especially from the corn fields of America’s heartland.
Today’s Story
In setting up this interview, the intention of our team’s travel to Curt Arens’ farm was to help him promote his book, ‘Down to Earth;’ but the couple of hours spent with Curt never amounted to a promotional drive for the book, Curt’s disposition simply would not let that happen. Curt’s humble way of approaching life’s challenges shines to the camera today when asked, “what lesson will readers of ‘Down to Earth’ learn from it’s pages?” Let God work. That simple statement has so much meaning in today’s wild world of freeways and Internet at every fingertip. But even for a humble farmer, those words carry lessons in letting go to allow God to take the reins. As Curt makes clear, most variables in the livelihood of farming are out of reach, one must have a deep faith to get through the hurdles of raising a crop or losing a friend.

How has the late and Great John Paul II impacted your personal story? Our team knows for a fact that we could dedicate an entire website just to people who have been changed for the better because of the life of Karol Wojtyla. Curt Arens story from Crofton, Nebraska, is one of those stories, he talks about the impact right at the beginning before diving into life as a Catholic farmer.
Today’s Story
What an incredible witness to hope and faith from Mr. Arens, a Catholic man who sheds light on trusting in God’s plan; even when losing your best crop in years to a 5-minute hail storm. Very quickly one may be humbled as a farmer. Working the land has made a profound impact on this man and his family. Even as a kid, Curt’s father would lead his family through a rosary on the front porch of their farm house for protection of their crops. Faith very quickly becomes a part of one’s life, in fact it is your life as a farmer in Curt’s opinion.
In this second part to Curt’s story, we also dive into the Seven Sacraments, and more specifically the Eucharist. Sister Veronica instilled in Curt as a boy an appreciation to how farmers can have a special connection to the Eucharist; since it is farmers who till the land that creates the wheat which is the host for Jesus’ own flesh at the moment of consecration.

As Catholics, we strive to understand virtue, and then live out those virtues daily, especially the Cardinal Virtues of Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude. It is safe to say that the man you are about to listen to exemplifies the four Cardinal Virtues better than most people in this world, we credit his farming, his family, and his strong faith for that claim.
Today’s Story
In recording this story, we spent about two hours with Curt, who lives in Nebraska on his family’s fourth generation farm. During those two hours of recording, our eyes were lifted to a man who has given his life for the land, his family, and above all else, his Catholic faith. Virtue exudes from his being, all you have to do is stand by the man. Once you click play, and listen to his words, you will understand what a great Catholic man is like in 2011. And on that note, our team wanted to go out with a bang for 2011, we hope you have enjoyed the ‘one billion Catholic stories’ of 2011, only God knows who shall arrive for the mission in 2012.
